There are many student areas where you can live in Bilbao, it depends on where are you going to study and the budget you have for the room. Bilbao is not a very big city and it has different transportation methods: bus, metro and tran. Using the public transportation it’s really easy and fast to move around the city; so it’s not really necessary to live close to the university if you reserve part of your monthly budget for public transportation expenses.
Deusto Neighborhood
Deusto is probably one of the most famous neighborhood of Bilbao due to the proximity of the University of Deusto. This neighborhood is located very close from the city center. You can reach the city center walking for 10-15 minutes; or in 5 minutes if you take a metro. It’s also a calmed part of the city, where you can find many students in some of the bars, like Drakkar or Irish Stones.
It’s the perfect option if you are going to study at the University of Deusto, because you can reach it by walk in less than 5 minutes. It is also a good option in case you study in Leioa, because there are different bus stops where the bus to Leioa stops.
Apart from that, the Happy Erasmus Bilbao office is located in this neighborhood. In case you need any help during your stay in Bilbao, this student association is going to help you.
The price of a room in Deusto is normally cheaper than in other parts of the city, but it varies depending on the conditions of the flat and the size of the room.
Sarriko – San Ignacio
Sarriko and San Ignacio are also very good locations to find your student room in Bilbao, because the Economic Faculty of the University of Basque Country is located in Sarriko. If you are looking for a calmed area, close to the faculty of Sarriko and with a good vibe, Sarriko is always a good option. The only thing you need to know is that the distance to the city center is bigger than in Deusto, so you are going to need to take the bus or metro to reach it.
The price of an student room in this area is normally similar to the price in Deusto, they are very similar nighborhoods. As always, it depends on how big your room is and the equipment of the flat.
Basurto – San Mamés
If you are going to study at the faculty of San Mamés, you’ll probably want to live near it. The problem is that the price of the rooms in this area is normally higher than in other neighborhoods, due to the proximity of this to the city center.
An alternative to it can be Basurto, which is close to San Mamés and where it’s possible to find cheap rooms. One of the main advantages of this area is that it’s close to the city center; and of course near San Mamés Stadium.
Abando
Located in the center of the city, is one of the most important neighborhoods of the city. In Abando you can find many clothing shops. A part of the financial area of Bilbao is also located in Abando and it’s easy to walk to some of the most reputated clubs of Bilbao from there. If you plan to go out for a party in order to make new friends, the pub Flash is your place. The pub is located in the center of Bilbao, so you will have multiple accesses to public transport (metro and bus) so you can be at home in a few minutes.
The Old Town of Bilbao is probably the most bohemian part of the basque city. At Casco Viejo you can find many different people; from different urban tribes. It’s of course the multiculturalism what really enriches this part of the city. It’s also typical to eat the traditional pintxos in the bars along Casco Viejo. Added to this, you can find local shops with traditional products you can buy as souvenir for your family and friends.
If you are thinking about living in Casco Viejo, you need to know that the price of a room here can be more expensive than in Deusto or other student neighborhoods.
